UNDERSTANDING NO-HEAT
What "No Indications of Heating" Means
Around 95% of sapphires are heat-treated before sale — fired at 800–1,800°C to dissolve inclusions and improve colour. The treatment is permanent, but gemmological laboratories can detect its characteristic signatures under microscopy: rounded, melted inclusions; stress fractures; burn marks; and altered iron-oxide colour zoning. "No indications of heating" printed on a certificate means the stone passed this full battery of tests with no evidence of treatment whatsoever.
How Labs Detect Heating
GRS, Gübelin, and SSEF gemmologists use three techniques in combination: microscopy to examine inclusion morphology (natural inclusions have sharp edges; heat treatment produces rounded, melted forms); FTIR spectroscopy to detect changes in hydroxyl content in the crystal lattice; and UV-Vis spectroscopy to assess whether colour-causing trace elements behave naturally. All three must show no evidence of heating before the "no indications" notation is issued.
Why the Premium Exists
Natural investment-grade colour in an unheated sapphire is genuinely rare. Heat treatment exists because the vast majority of mined sapphires have disappointing colour without it — heating is how unremarkable rough becomes sellable goods. A sapphire with investment-grade colour that required no intervention is, by definition, a statistical outlier. That inherent, lab-verifiable rarity is what sustains the 2–5× premium — not marketing.
Certificate Terminology
"No indications of heating" is the industry-standard phrase, equivalent to "unheated." Any other wording — "minor indications of heating," "indications of heating," or no treatment comment at all — means the stone is heated or its status is uncertain. Always require a top-tier lab certificate with this explicit phrase; appraisal reports from unknown labs are not acceptable substitutes when purchasing unheated sapphires.

Ceylon
The world's primary source for unheated sapphires across all colours — blue, cornflower, pink, yellow, and padparadscha. Unheated Ceylon sapphires have the deepest auction liquidity of any origin and are the first choice for institutional buyers seeking a clear exit path.
Kashmir
The mine is exhausted. Almost all known Kashmir sapphires are unheated — heat treatment was not widespread when the deposit was active. Kashmir origin alone commands enormous premiums; the no-heat confirmation compounds it further. Fine Kashmir unheated sapphires reach $20,000–$200,000+ per carat.
Burma
Burmese sapphires from Mogok are prized for deeply saturated royal blue. Unheated Burma sapphires command a 3–5× premium over heated equivalents, with the Burma origin premium itself set to increase as supply from the region remains restricted.
