WHAT MAKES A FINE RUBY?
Color
Color is paramount. The ideal is "pigeon blood" — a pure, vivid red with a hint of blue, creating an almost fluorescent glow. Avoid stones that are too dark (appearing brown) or too light (appearing pink).
Clarity
Rubies almost always contain inclusions — a completely clean ruby is suspicious. Fine silk inclusions can actually improve appearance by softening the color. Eye-clean stones are exceptional.
Origin
Burma (Myanmar) produces the most valued rubies. Mozambique has emerged as a quality source. Thai rubies tend darker. Origin significantly impacts value.
Size
Fine rubies over 3 carats are rare. Over 5 carats, exceptional. Over 10 carats, museum-quality. Price per carat increases dramatically with size.
RUBY ORIGINS
BURMA (MYANMAR)
The Mogok Valley has produced the world's finest rubies for centuries. The legendary "pigeon blood" color originates here. Political instability limits supply, increasing value.
MOZAMBIQUE
Discovered in 2009, Mozambique quickly became a major source. Produces vivid reds that can rival Burma. More accessible pricing makes it attractive for collectors.
PIGEON BLOOD
Fewer than 1% of rubies earn GRS pigeon blood designation — the rarest colour grade in gemology. A pure vivid red with chromium fluorescence, almost exclusively from Mogok, Burma. Commands a 2–5× premium over standard rubies.
Unheated Ruby
Over 95% of rubies are heat treated. GRS or Gübelin certified natural unheated rubies command 3–10× premiums, with entirely natural colour — the highest form of authenticity.
Star Ruby
Cabochon rubies with a moving 6-ray asterism formed by natural rutile needle inclusions. Virtually all star rubies are unheated. Rarer than star sapphires, combining optical phenomenon with gemstone investment value.
Ceylon Ruby
Natural rubies from Ceylon’s Ratnapura and Elahera districts, prized for vivid pinkish-red to deep red hues and exceptional transparency. Premier origin provenance at a compelling value versus Burma — ideal for the discerning collector.
