WHAT IS PIGEON BLOOD?
The Colour Standard: "Pigeon blood" is a precise gemological colour grade, not a metaphor. GRS defines it as a hue of pure red (H6–H7), strong to vivid saturation (S4–S6), and medium tone (T2–T4). Any deviation toward purple, orange, or excessive darkness disqualifies a stone regardless of origin or size.
Chromium Fluorescence: Burma's Mogok marble deposits produce rubies with high chromium concentrations that generate intense red fluorescence in daylight. This makes stones appear to "glow from within" — a characteristic that is almost impossible to replicate from other origins and is central to the pigeon blood evaluation.
The Certification Process: GRS (Gemresearch Swisslab), SSEF, and Gübelin are the three laboratories whose "pigeon blood" notation carries full market weight. The designation appears explicitly in the colour description field of the certificate. Always verify certificate numbers directly on the issuing lab's website before purchase.
Origin vs. Grade: Pigeon blood is technically a colour grade, not an origin label. However, over 97% of certified pigeon blood rubies originate from Burma's Mogok Valley. Mozambique occasionally produces stones approaching the standard, but commands a significantly lower premium than Burma-origin material.
