How Labs Detect Heating
Gemologists at GRS, Gübelin, and SSEF apply three independent techniques: microscopic examination of inclusion morphology (natural inclusions show sharp, angular edges; heat treatment causes them to melt into rounded shapes and partially dissolves rutile silk); Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) to detect changes in OH-bond content and water signatures; and UV-Vis spectroscopy to confirm the naturalness of the colour-causing mechanism. Only when all three show zero heating evidence is the "no indications" notation granted.

Rubies differ from sapphires in one critical way: natural top colour in rubies is even rarer. The vast majority of mined rubies are too dark, brownish, or pinkish for investment-grade use — heat treatment is a necessary commercial step, not an enhancement of already-fine stones. Reading the Certificate
"No indications of heating" is the industry-standard phrase, directly equivalent to "unheated." Any other wording — "indications of heating," "minor indications," or no treatment comment at all — means the stone is heated or its status is uncertain, with a corresponding collapse in value. When buying an unheated ruby, insist on a certificate from a top-tier laboratory that explicitly states this phrase. Reports from unknown or unrecognised labs carry no credible weight.
